Born (1971) in the historic city of Constanța beside the Black Sea, Gili Mocanu is widely known as an accomplished and unique Romanian painter whose work has been shown in numerous major galleries and museums across the world. Inspired by a generation of avant-garde Romanian composers like Iancu Dumitrescu, Octavian Nemescu and Ștefan Niculescu, Gili has also been consistently involved in sound recording since the early ‘90s, and under his long-running Somnoroase Păsărele and Centrul Isteric guises, sometimes in collaboration with others, his music has evolved its own distinctive character. Employing atypical synth sounds, spectralist techniques, and asymmetrical or non-rhythmic elements, the results have included excursions into minimalist, ambient and drone territory.

Ippu Mitsui – Shift Down CD
Ippu has achieved a minor cult following in the UK, featuring on BBC Radio 6Music and frequently on local radio shows such as BCfm’s In-Tune with Phil Vickery, and Radio Woking’s Comfy Show, as well as web radio such as Radiocoolio. “Shift Down” is Ippu’s first release for the Submarine Broadcasting Company and demonstrates a subtle change of direction, with some more mid-tempo or mellower pieces: “Absolutely loving this mellow side of Ippu; Drifting Into Warm Sunset sounds more and more beautifully lush and dreamy every time you play it.” — Monolith Cocktail

Menhir – Sound Track CD
Sound Track, part of Menhir’s Desert Series is inspired by the Sahara desert and the saharaui refugee camps. It is the soundtrack of the documentary “My first life”, by the Mexican filmmaker Carlos Hernández. The film describes the birth and first days of a child in the camps. The music is composed with analog synths, voices, and electric guitars, mixed with medieval cellos and sandstorms, in 6 music pieces of ritual ambient. Recorded live in the studio, it’s music conceived to overflow the inside-out. A song that is a message, dream wrapped. The changeless time, pulling us as sandstorms. The possible sun and light.

The German Ocean – The German Ocean CD
“Once upon a time, we looked outward”…. The German Ocean formed in late 2020, a partnership between Darren j Holloway of SINNEN and Gavin Martin. It very quickly became apparent that the sounds and shapes coming out of this pairing were a significant departure from those of the SINNEN collective, harking back to Darren’s days as producer of filmic ambient mini-scores but with a fresh, harsher, darker edge. There was something timeless in the mix, something oceanic in the sound, moments and phases reminding the listener of a Great War era submarine chugging ghost-like just below periscope depth. The eight songs on this eponymous debut formed, floated, swam and dived through the cold waters of The North Lands, perhaps hinting at a reminder that things were not always so introspective as they seem now, and that maybe our better futures lie somewhere beyond renamed borders and sea masses. Welcome (back) to The German Ocean.
