Vancouver, Canada. June 22, 1978. First Georgia Straight Battle of the Bands. D.O.A. shouldn’t have been there. And they weren’t. They played the next night. It was No Fun that played there in the Body Shop on the first night. David M. brought his trusty 4-track down for both nights. D.O.A. pressed a 4-track EP from their set. The No Fun document from this event is lesser known… until now.

Chord – Demo CD
Chord, the “power ambient” quintet from Chicago has made a name developing an evolving process rooted in the idea that their purpose is to use a self-limiting palate of musical tools (texture, dynamics) to provide an immersive experience. Their primary releases for labels such as Nuerot, Important, and Debacle have evolved quite a bit since these early demo recordings were originally released in 2006, but these early experiments document their blueprint well. Originally devised as a drone collective with live performances consisting with as many as 11 players, the core of the group eventually centered around four players (Kyle Benjamin, Phil Dole, Jason Hoffman, Trevor Shelley de Brauw), with Sean McCarthy becoming a fifth core member before the recording of the second album Progression in 2011.

Naked & Shameless – Whiskey Tango Foxtrot CD
The Buck (Naked) and Dave (Shameless) formulation of Naked & Shameless spent the 2000s grinding it out from their base in Chicago with a regular stream of releases and cross-country dive-bar tours. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot was the first recording they made after they moved to Los Angles and before tinsel town ate them alive. While fans have favorites on other discs such as 13 Drinking Songs and Mayberry STD, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot might well be their most cohesive collection, simultaneously mature and adolescent, pointing the way that duo would have gone had they continued in that format.

X-Bax – Dronetime CD
Dronetime (2007), was X-Bax’s second album and follow-up to In Search of The Brown Note (2004). Longer and dronier than its predecessor, it pointed the path forward. X-Bax continues to a vehicle for Phil Dole’s experimental musing when not playing with other groups such as Chord, Grand Kali Ma, Dole & Megalos, and Dots.

Long Beach Huntington – Ken’s #2, Anti-Tech Police & Other Delights CD
Ken “Long Beach” Huntington is a long time fixture of the local Long Beach, California independent music scene. Known primarily for his harmonica playing, both in the Full Tilt Trio and as guest player for other artists, he has also played other instrument in a range of other settings, from straight up rock to experimental music (notably joining X-Bax in 2015). His solo recordings have a distinct outsider vibe, based in roots music (folk-rock, blues, country) with the occasional dash of psychedelia. This anothology is the first public release of material culled from his DIY recordings.
